OUR AIMS: To uphold the rights and to improve and protect the interests and lifestyle of and To encourage a spirit of mutual well-being and understanding amongst the landholders and residents of the Alice Springs rural area.
HISTORY of ASRAA Inc. The Wangardi Volunteer Fire Brigade was pro-active in forming the Association after a public meeting in 1987. The Association was formed in 1988 in response to the then imminent expansion of the Alice Springs Municipal boundary to include the area south of the Heavitree Range, for the first time. In 1996 working with the Arid Lands Environment Centre, it promoted the protection of the Claypans off Ilparpa Road.
ASRAA Inc. has/has had positions on:
- Ilparpa Swamp Rehabilitation Committee (NTG)
- AS Water Advisory Committee (NTG Ministerial Appointment)
- Dog Control Steering Committee (ASTC)
- Environmental Advisory Committee (ASTC)
Issues of interest and concern ASRAA Inc. has acted on include:
- Planning Development Applications and Liquor Licences.
- Road safety including rail crossings and the Heavitree Causeway.
- Fire issues; infrastructure and education
- Town Council rates and services
- Wheelie bins and dump charges
- Animal control bylaws
- Street lights and signage
- Power, water & telecommunication
- Flooding in Heenan Road
- Sewage in the swamp
- 20m. power poles proposal
ASRAA Inc. meetings are held quarterly in the Day Centre at Old Timers, Stuart Highway on Sunday mornings at 10.00 am to address current concerns with occasional guest speakers.
